This setup allows you to see changes in air density which is normally invisible to the human eye. The point light source is aimed at a concave mirror. The concave mirror reflects to a focal point. Then a sharp edged object partially blocks the light to create a shadow effect that allows you to see air movement. This is the Schlieren effect. Wikipedia
