‘초강대국’ 꿈꾸는 러, 붉은 광장서 강력한 군사력 과시

Warplanes screamed overhead and tanks rumbled past massed ranks of soldiers on Tuesday (April 22) as Russia prepared an annual victory parade designed to show the world its military is a force to be reckoned with.
전투기들이 굉음을 내며 하늘을 가르고 전차들은 장병들의 대규모 행진 대열 옆에서 지축을 울리며 질주했다. 22일 러시아 군은 5월 9일의 제2차 세계대전 승전기념일 행사 예행연습을 실시해 다시금 강력해진 군사력을 세계에 과시했다.

 

President Vladimir Putin has ordered generals to revive this year a Soviet-era tradition of driving tanks, howitzers and missile launchers through Red Square during the annual parade which commemorates Russia's defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945.
블라디미르 푸틴 러시아 대통령은 군 수뇌부에 구 소련 시절 전통이었던 전승기념일 군사퍼레이드를 다시 부활시킬 것을 명령했다. 1945년 러시아가 나치 독일을 물리친 것을 기념해 매년 펼쳐졌던 군사퍼레이드에서는 전차, 야포, 미사일 등의 대형무기가 모스크바 붉은 광장을 누볐다.

 

Moscow region military commander General Vladimir Bakin told reporters on Tuesday that his troops were "ready on May 9 to show the world that our Russian army is strong".
러시아 모스크바군구 사령관 블라디미르 바킨 장군은 22일 로이터 통신과의 회견에서 이번 행사는 러시아군의 강력함을 세계에 보여줄 5월 9일 승전기념일 퍼레이드의 예행연습이라고 밝혔다.

 

After years of sharply rising military spending, much of it on new weapons and equipment, politicians and generals are keen to show results at home and to send a message overseas about Russia's renewed power.
최근 몇 년 간 러시아의 군비는 급격히 증강됐고, 대부분은 신형 무기와 장비 도입에 쓰였다. 러시아 정계와 군 당국은 국내적으로는 그 결과를 국민들에게 보이고 한편 세계에 러시아의 군사력이 새로이 재정비되었음을 알리려 하고 있다.

 

But Putin's order has posed a challenge for the top brass, which has not displayed heavy weaponry at the parade in Red Square since 1990, the year before the Soviet Union's collapse.
하지만 푸틴 대통령의 명령은 90년 이후 대형무기의 열병 행사를 해 본 적이 없는 군 고위층에게 어려운 과제를 제시한 것이다. 구 소련이 붕괴하기 직전인 1990년을 끝으로 붉은 광장의 승전기념일 군사퍼레이드에는 미사일 같은 대형무기가 동원되지 않았다.

 

The Moscow region's army press service said 110 pieces of military hardware would take part in the May 9 parade this year, including the Topol and the Iskander M, Russia's most modern missile launchers.
모스크바군구 공보실은 올 5월 9일의 퍼레이드에 총 110 대의 군 장비가 동원될 것이며, 대륙간전략탄도탄 ‘토폴’과 단거리전술탄도탄 ‘이스칸데르-M’ 등 최신형 미사일도 포함되어 있다고 밝혔다.

 

"The participation of heavy weapon and military equipment does not signal that we want to show our opponents or allies how strong we are. It is simply for the benefit of the people of Russia, who should see what kind of army they have , and what kinds of weapons the army has. The weapons on display are good, but we have even better ones," General Mikhail Moiseyev, former Soviet army commander told reporters on Tuesday.
전직 구소련 육군 사령관 미하일 모이세예프 장군은 군사퍼레이드에 대형무기가 동원되는 이유는 단지 적성국과 우방국에 강한 군사력을 과시하려는 것만은 아니며, 러시아 국민들에게 자국의 강력한 군사력을 실제로 확인할 수 있는 계기를 제공하려는 것이라고 밝혔다.

 

Some 8,000 troops have been practising intensively ahead of the big day and staged a dress rehearsal at a specially built parade ground outside Moscow on Tuesday, whose dimensions mimic Red Square.
모스크바 외곽에 실제 붉은 광장과 유사한 규모로 세워진 예행연습장에서 이날 8000여 명의 병력이 리허설을 실시했다.

 

Generals barked orders at the troops, representing different branches of Russia's one million-strong armed forces as they marched stiffly past a viewing stand to martial music from a brass band, their heads all turned to the right to face the reviewing officers.
장성들이 대열을 향해 명령을 내리자 강력한 100만명 규모의 러시아군을 구성하는 육, 해, 공 군과 전략로켓군, 우주군, 공수사령부를 상징하는 병사들이 연단 앞을 지나 행진했다. 군악대의 연주가 울려퍼지며 병사들이 참관하는 장성들을 향해 오른쪽으로 고개를 돌렸다.

 

Two silver open-top Zil limousines -- the Soviet equivalent of the Cadillac -- carried the parade commander and an official standing in for Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov, who will take the parade.
질(미국의 캐딜락에 비견할 만한 러시아 자동차 메이커)의 은색 오픈 탑 리무진 두 대에 퍼레이드의 총 지휘관, 그리고 실제 행사에 참석할 아나톨리 세르쥬코프 국방장관 역을 맡은 장교가 탑승했다.

 

Cannons boomed as the troops bellowed out the Russian national anthem, its verses changed for modern times but its tune restored by Putin to the old Soviet one.
러시아 국가가 연주되는 가운데 예포가 발사됐다. 현재 러시아 국가는 가사가 현대적으로 바뀌었지만 멜로디는 푸틴 대통령의 지시에 따라 옛 소련시절 국가가 부활했다.

 

Around 30 warplanes flew over the parade ground, including Russia's supersonic bombers, MiG fighters and helicopters.
러시아 공군의 초음속 폭격기와 미그 전투기, 헬리콥터를 비롯한 30여 대의 군용기가 행진대열 상공을 비행했다.

 

On the ground, officers showed off specially designed plastic blocks which will be inserted into tracks of the tanks and other military vehicles, preventing their weight of up to 46 tonnes from damaging the cobblestones of historic Red Square.
지상에서는 장교들이 특별히 제작된 플라스틱 블록을 공개했다. 전차를 비롯한 행사에 동원될 군용장비들 중에는 무게가 최고 46톤에 이르는 것도 있어 역사적인 장소인 붉은 광장의 코블스톤이 손상될 수도 있기에, 이를 막기 위해 퍼레이드가 참가하는 전차 등의 궤도에 이 특수블록을 끼우게 된다.

 

Special metal columns have been inserted into metro stations and other underground structures to strengthen them along the route the tanks and other heavy weapons will take to Red Square.
또한 퍼레이드 행렬이 지나가는 방향에 있는 시내 지하철 역을 비롯한 다른 지하 시설물들에는 구조 강화를 위해 특수 제작된 강철 기둥이 설치될 예정이다.

 

The number of military vehicles will be fewer than in Soviet times because the historic gates into Red Square -- demolished by Stalin to facilitate the passage of tanks -- have been rebuilt. This means heavy weapons can only approach and leave the square from the river side.
퍼레이드에 동원되는 군용차량들의 수는 옛 소련 시절에 비해 적은 편이다. 붉은 광장에 있었다가 스탈린이 전차의 진입을 쉽게 하기 위해 파괴해 버렸던 역사적인 ‘부활의 문’이 다시 광장 입구에 복원됐기 때문이다. 그렇기에 중장비들은 강안 쪽을 통해서만 진입하고 또 나갈 수 있다.

 

Russia did not hold big military parades in Red Square in the chaotic years of 1991-94 and in 1995 -- the 50th anniversary of Russia's World War Two victory -- military hardware was paraded separately from the soldiers outside Red Square.
After that, only soldiers marched.
구 소련이 붕괴되기 시작한 1991년부터 1994년까지의 혼란기에 러시아는 대규모의 군사퍼레이드를 실시하지 않았다. 2차대전 승전 50주년이었던 1995년에는 군 장비들이 붉은 광장 밖까지만 행진했고, 붉은 광장 안에서는 병사들의 행진만이 실시됐었다.
