“우주인 급구! 기본급 8000만원, 고용 보장 못 함”

 

Astronauts wanted! Four European astronauts are required for missions to the International Space Station, the moon and beyond.
우주인 모집. 달 너머에 있는 국제 우주 정거장에서 임무를 수행할 4명의 유럽 우주인을 구한다.

 

Applicants must be between 27 and 37, have a pilot's medical certificate, an advanced science degree - and speak Russian. Gerhard Thiele was selected as an astronaut for the European Space Agency 20 years ago and is choosing this year's new recruits.
지원자의 나이는 27세에서 37세 사이여야 하며, ‘비행사 건강 진단서’를 보유하고 있어야 한다. 과학 관련 학위를 소지하고 있어야 하며 러시아어가 가능해야 한다. 게르하르트 틸레 씨는 20년 전 유럽우주기구의 우주인으로 선발됐다. 그리고 올해 후배 우주인을 선발한다. 

 

SOUNDBITE Head of ESA Astronaut Programme, Gerhard Thiele, saying (English):"First of all we are looking for people who feel the urge to explore, who are hungry to learn about the unknown and discover what the unknown has for us. We are looking for people who are ready for surprises because the job has many surprises and of course you have to have the right professional background, either in engineering or a science degree in natural sciences or a test piloting background. And all these credentials help. And it's the right mix of all of those. It is not that singular excellence will get you the job."
“우선 탐험을 원하고 미지의 세계를 배우고 새로운 발견을 하는데 목말라 있는 사람이 필요합니다. 우주인이란 직업에는 놀랄 일이 자주 생기니까 그런 것에 준비가 되신 분을 원합니다. 물론 이쪽 분야에 필요한 전문 지식을 갖추고 있어야 하겠죠. 기계공학, 자연과학 분야 학위를 가지고 있거나 비행 조종사 경력이 있어야 합니다. 앞서 말한 것과 관련된 자격증은 모두 도움이 될 것입니다. 모든 자질이 적절히 조화를 이뤄야 합니다. 어느 한 부분에서 능통하다고 해서 뽑힐 수 있는 것이 아닙니다” 라고 유럽우주기구의 틸레 씨가 말했다.

 

ESA is expecting 20,000 - 50,000 applicants and the recruitment process takes six months.One hopeful is Gayle Ayles, who already works for the European Space Agency as a scientific researcher.
유럽우주기구 측은 지원자가 2만에서 5만 명 정도 몰릴 것으로 예상하며 채용 절차는 총 6개월이 걸릴 것으로 내다보고 있다.

 

SOUNDBITE Candidate to become ESA astronaut, Gayle Ayles, saying (English):"Absolutely I am a scientist so I would like to do science wherever possible. If there is the added challenge of microgravity, yeah, go for it! I've already done some parabolic flights with the space agency, so I've already done some science in the microgravity regime. And it was great because it meant I could apply both, my physical fitness and my mental abilities at the same time."
우주인 시험에 지원할 예정인 게일 에일스 씨는 “물론 과학자로서 가능하다면 어디에서나 연구를 하고 싶습니다. 극미 중력 테스트가 있다면 도전하겠습니다. 이미 우주기구에서 마련한 ‘포물선 비행’(역주:비행기가 9천6백m 상공까지 올라갔다가 2천4백m를 수직 하강하는 것)도 해 본 적이 있습니다. 그 당시 극미 중력을 경험했습니다. 제 체력과 의지를 시험해 볼 수 있는 좋은 기회였습니다”라고 말했다.

 

Basic net pay starts at $80,000 per year. But job security may be in jeopardy, the life of the space station is only guaranteed until 2015.
기본급은 8000만원부터 시작한다. 하지만 고용 보장이 제대로 되지 않을 수 있다.  우주 정거장의 수명이 2015년 까지만 보장되기 때문이다.
